We all have our own story. We all come from different walks of life. Just as each couple has their own love story. One of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer is meeting with a newly engaged couple and hearing their love story. They are so excited to share how they met and how he proposed. They usually each have their own version of their story too. I never tire of hearing their love stories. Often couples ask me about my love story with Farmer J. So I have decided to share our love story with you, from “Hello” to “I do”.
Part Five: The Proposal! Farmer J had invited me to get away to Lake Almanor for the weekend. My sister shared with me that she thought Farmer J was going to propose. I doubted her, because I thought that he would not propose with me starting my first teaching job ever that upcoming week. (I can get stressed and grumpy with new ventures.) My sister got in my head though; and I did go to Gottschalks to buy a new shirt though just in case!
When we arrived at the Almanor cabin, we realized that the door that was supposed to be unlocked for us was locked. After scouting out how to break in, Farmer J spotted a teeny tiny bathroom window on the second story of the cabin that had been left ajar. (I want to add that the cabin was on an extreme hill!) We borrowed a ladder from a neighbor. We did not ask permission to borrow the ladder, but Farmer J did return the ladder after I did not die.
Due to the steep incline, Farmer J had to support the ladder; so I did not tip over. I remember climbing on the very tall and steep ladder and thinking that the firemen were going to have to rescue me. If I had fallen off the ladder with a trip to the ER, we may not be where we are today!
On August 13, 2005, we had burgers for lunch and then went to the small market to buy ingredients to make spaghetti and salad for dinner. Once dinner was done, Farmer J asked me if I wanted to go for a golf cart ride down to the peninsula. Oh my gosh, this could be it. Farmer J may propose! On the drive down, Farmer J was acting really odd. He got really quiet. He tried to make small talk, but it was not natural. Everything else from then on seemed like a blur. We got out of the golf cart; and Farmer J got down on one knee, professed his love, and he proposed right as the sun slid behind the mountains. I still remember watching the sun disappear and thinking that his timing was perfect! Once we returned to the cabin, we played the board game Life to see how our future would turn out.
I later learned that Farmer J had previously visited my parents while I was working at Hula’s Chinese BBQ. He went to visit them to ask for their permission for my hand in marriage. My mom remembers Farmer J stopping by their house, and she shared that I was not home. Farmer J informed them that he was there to see them. My dad had his shirt off, because he and my mom had been working in the yard. My dad felt like he needed to go inside to put his shirt on, so they could chat. I was so impressed that Farmer J had been so sneaky, and he had talked to my parents without my knowledge!
My sister was right! She knew nothing of Farmer J’s plan. After we left for Almanor, my parents let my sister in on the secret. Whenever I called to check in at home, they were on pins and needles to see if Farmer J had proposed yet! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had to start my first of teaching EVER with crazy bruises on my legs from my shimmy through the second story window! We still enjoy sharing our proposal story!
