Katie and Karl were married in June of 2017. In September 2017, they were both in attendance at the Las Vegas Route 91 Jason Alden concert when a man started shooting at the concert fans. Both Katie and Karl had to dive to the ground for safety and then run again when the shooter was reloading. Katie and Karl were eventually reunited, and they were the angels that helped other people feel safe during this scary life event. #route91angels Once they were both safe, they realized that a bullet had hit the ground, shattered, and then the shrapnel sliced Katie’s boot. Both of their boots are worn out from crawling and diving to the ground.
After Las Vegas, Katie sought out her dad, Bob, for comfort and reassurance. He confirmed that everything was going to be okay. That she was going to be okay. Once Katie returned to teaching on her first day back, her school went on a lock down. Katie decided that she needed a break and took a leave of absence. Not long after these traumatic events, Katie lost her father in January of 2018. It had been a whirlwind of a year, with joy and heartbreak. After all of the negatives that came within their first year of marriage, they have a wonderful positive to look forward to – a baby is due to enter their lives in December!
